Strathyre, famed in the song 'Bonnie Strathyre' is a small village about 5 miles north of Callander on the A84 trunk road. It is well provided with accommodation in the form of three hotels, an inn and several bed and breakfast establishments as well as a number of self-catering cottages and cobins in the area.

The old village of Strathyre was mainly situated on the west side of the river Balvaig but was moved to its present position as it was in the way of the Dunblane to Oban railway which was built in the mid 19th century but closed by Doctor Beeching 1n 1963. The rail trackbed is now a long distance footpath. The village lies in a sheltered glen between forest clad hills, the best known being the 'fairy mountain' of Ben Sithean on the west side. Strathyre is also well known as the starting point for the Stuc a Chroin hill race, 22 k in length and with a total ascent of 5000 feet. The event takes place in mid June every year.

Just half a mile south of Strathyre is Loch Lubnaig, the crooked loch. The A84 road follows the east shore of the loch and several parking areas provide opportunities to stop for a picnic and admire the views and reflections in the normally placid waters.

Things to see

Take a look at the memorial in the centre of the village which commemorates the gaelic religous poet Dugald Buchanan who was born in Strathyre and buried in Callander.

Take an excursion to the pass of Leny south of the village to see the Falls of Leny

Visit Balquhidder Glen to see the burial place of Rob Roy McGregor

Things to do

Take your bike (or hire one) and access the cycleway to follow the west shore of loch Lubnaig to Callander or head north to visit Killin via Balquhidder. Either direction provides fabulous scenery and is for the most part level although the last part of the ride to Killin is quite steep as it leaves the old rail track to drop to Killin.

Walk up through the woods on the west side to the Bailefuil Walk or if feeling energetic extend your walk to the summit of Ben Sithean.

If really energetic you can walk Glen Ample from a laybye south of Strathyre to Loch Earn - you'll have to arrange transport to return.

Relax by the river Balvaig on a little beach or walk south on the cycleway to find a quiet spot beside Loch Lubnaig
